Upgrade to DAB radio in your car
Heard about digital radio? It’s the exciting new way to listen to lots of radio stations in clear digital quality. A lot of people will have used DAB digital radio at home, or online through the Internet, but most cars are yet to catch up with the digital revolution. A lot of cars, particularly older models, will be fitted with a standard FM radio receiver. This means that you can’t pick up all the new stations exclusive to digital. There will be reasons why you can’t replace your existing radio with a shiny new DAB one, for example, it may be integrated and required to use your car computer. The AutoDAB Connect is a DAB adaptor that attaches to your existing car stereo. The included digital antenna picks up radio stations and plays them through your speakers. You can change channels using the sleek, un-obtrusive remote control panel.
When you buy your AutoDAB Connect from the RAC Shop you’ll also get the installation and fitting included in the price. Our partners, The Chameleon Group Ltd will install, test and demonstrate your new digital radio either at home, or at the office. You won’t need to take your car to a garage and leave it there for the work to be done.
For the safety of our installers we can only carry out fitting in an off-road location such as a drive, car port, garage, parking bay, or work car park. If you are not the owner of the property or land you must seek permission for the work to be done BEFORE we attend the appointment.
Digital Antennas & Aerials
Digital signals work in a different way to traditional FM radio which means they are more sensitive to signal drop out. If you travel longer distances you may experience periods were the signal disappears as you move out of coverage. DAB radio upgrades include an internal antenna that attaches to the inside of your windscreen. In most cases this will provide a good quality signal for you to enjoy digital radio. However, in some cases when an installer attends the installation they may discover that you will need a more powerful external antenna to pick up all DAB stations. A number of factors can affect this:
- Your vehicle may be fitted with a heat reflective windscreen which can degrade the signal.
- Gadgets and accessories such as mobile phones, charging cables, sat navs, dash cams etc. emit RF noise which can affect the signal quality.
- Low coverage areas have a weaker signal that the internal antenna won’t be able to lock on to.
If your vehicle is affected the installer will advise you that an external antenna is required, discuss the options and advise you of the cost (the external antenna is not included in the price of the kit).
Does my town have good DAB coverage?
You can use the DAB signal coverage checker to see what coverage is like in your area. This will also tell you which DAB radio stations are available.
